‘It’s Finally Ironic’: Sisters Rewrite Alanis Morissette’s Signature Song In Viral YouTube Video

Alanis Morissette’s breakthrough 1996 hit “Ironic” has been criticized over the years for its misuse of “irony,” which the Merriam-Webster Dictionary states is “the use of words to express something other than and especially the opposite of the literal meaning.” So lyrics like “a traffic jam when you’re already late” don’t make the cut.

Now 17 years after “Ironic” became a top 40 hit, the Hurwitz sisters are teaching Morissette the true meaning of irony in their viral YouTube video “It’s Finally Ironic.” The song spoofs the original “Ironic” music video featuring four Alanises in a car and has the sisters singing the song in different seats.

While some of the examples in the “Ironic” rewrite don’t make sense, like “it’s a black fly in your chardonnay that was specifically purchased to repel black flies,” it’s a step in the right direction in comparison to the lack of irony in the original version of “Ironic.”
