What would you do right before going through a major, life-altering surgery?
Deborah Cohan, a mother of two and OBGYN who specializes in treating pregnant women with HIV, had a flash mob dance party. Before undergoing a double mastectomy on Tuesday, Cohan, in her patient’s gown, and her surgical team, in their scrubs, joyfully danced to the Beyonce track “Get Me Bodied.”
The dance was planned by Cohan, who encouraged others to join in on her CaringBridge page, where she wrote: “Nothing brings me greater joy than catalyzing others to dance, move, be in their bodies. Are you with me people?”
Cohan told ABC7-TV in San Francisco: “I was more nervous about how the flash mob was going to go than how the surgery was going to go.”
The video of the pre-op dance party was posted on the same day on YouTube and has since garnered over 4 million views. Beyonce herself caught on and shared the video on her Facebook, commenting, “Deborah, you are awesome!”
Adding to the inspirational story, Cohan’s co-workers at San Francisco General Hospital posted their own flash mob dance video in support of her recovery:
