Twitter is being called out this week by major civil rights organizations. The Rainbow PUSH Coalition, led by Rev. Jesse Jackson, and Color of Change are putting the heat on Twitter to release their diversity numbers for their staff.
Facebook, Linkedin, Google and Yahoo have already complied with this request, only to showcase their ever-so disappointing low staff diversity. The majority of employees were male, usually white or Asian.
Color of Change has started a petition to push Twitter to disclose their numbers, even though the organization is fully aware that their diversity will probably mirror that of its Silicon Valley neighbors.
In said petition, COC stated: “Though its minority representation numbers may mirror other Silicon Valley tech companies, Twitter has a very unique role to play in this national conversation about hiring discrimination. [Twitter’s platform] has been built off the creativity of Black people and, as such, the company owes our community more- more transparency, and a more thoughtful solutions-orientated approach that addresses its failure to be more inclusive without blaming Black people.”
Although Twitter’s spokesperson said the company has no response, it’s inevitably only a matter a time before their numbers are released. If they do in fact end up being dreary in the diversity department, they could follow in the steps of Google, who have promised to team up with Rev. Jackson in order to improve their diversity numbers.
