Recasting Movies With YouTubers: The Avengers

Since we’re weekend warriors now, it only makes sense that we break from the pack and engage in some rampant free-thinking. Pretty soon YouTube and Hollywood should completely merge and we will be seeing our favorite YouTubers starring in our favorite TV shows and movies. Of course, until that point, we can only speculate on what might have been had this merger happened 10, 20 or 500 years ago. So every weekend, we take a pop culture movie and recast it with YouTubers who we think might have worked perfectly in that role.

This week: The Avengers

Okay, it was only a matter of time before we had the “Which YouTubers Would We Cast As Superheroes” discussion. Frankly, it comes sooner than I feel comfortable with, but how could we not choose to recast The Avengers what with the new “Age of Ultron” trailer dropping this week? Telling the story of a team of superheroes banding up to save the world, The Avengers is basically box office gold in movie form. Starring popular comic book heroes like Captain America, The Hulk and Iron Man, this movie is in serious need of a YouTube recasting.

Iron Man

Played in the movie by: Robert Downey Jr.
Played in our version by: Toby Turner

So wild, so sarcastic, so brilliant. Toby is the only logical YouTuber choice for Iron Man — and I work in the space, I’d know. Imagine him leading his crew of do-gooders into a battle against the worst the universe has to offer. Now imagine him leading them all in a pleasant campfire singalong.

Captain America

Played in the movie by: Chris Evans
Played in our version by: Joe Beretta

Really I should have done a whole Sourcefed AS The Avengers piece, but I like my choices here, so I am staying pat. But I think I just might recast Sourcefed as Scooby Doo next Saturday … which fulfills the question I set out to answer in my interview with them oh so long ago …

Black Widow

Played in the movie by: Scarlett Johannsson
Played in our version by: Olga Kay

Olga Kay for sure. Russian(ish) and would look amazing in a skintight catsuit? Also, those juggling skills aren’t for nothing. Olga would slip into this role perfectly and kick some major ass, right along with the fellas.

Hawkeye

Played in the movie by: Jeremy Renner
Played in our version by: FPSRussia

I don’t think I’d want to watch a YouTube movie that involved a sharpshooter badass with a mastery of weapons, where the character wasn’t played by FPSRussia. As far as weapons stockpiles go, FPSRussia is a one-man army.

Thor

Played in the movie by: Chris Hemsworth
Played in our version by: Furious Pete

Have you ever looked ar Furious Pete? Furious Pete basically is Thor — except from Canada. Furious Pete is also one of the few YouTubers who stands a chance at both wielding the mighty hammer Mjolnir

The Hulk

Played in the movie by: Mark Ruffalo
Played in our version by: Vsauce2

You’d think Harley Morenstein would be a slam dunk here, right? Wrong. Harley is our choice for THE HULK, and since it’s our recasting, we’re just going to paint Harley green instead of using lame-ass CGI. But while Harley is the Hulk, we’re really casting for Bruce Banner — the smart and smallish scientist. Hmm, smart smallish scientist type on YouTube … look no further than Vsauce2, Kevin Lieber. Yup, perfect.

Loki

Played in the movie by: Tom Hiddleston
Played in our version by: Roman Atwood

Here’s the problem: Loki’s a bad guy, but you don’t actually want to cast a YouTube BAD GUY — no sense in filling perfectly good roles with rapists or creeps. So who is a good guy who could play the very sneaky and nefarious trickster god Loki? Trickster, you say? Capable of PLAYING a bad guy? Roman Atwood sewed this part up years ago.

Hate our choices? Think we’re way off base? Can you think of someone better? Let us know who you’d re-recast. Also share this article because hypotheticals like this are awesome.
