Will the Prince that was Promised Be Revealed in Game of Thrones Season 6?
Who is Azor Ahai? For such an important figure in the book series we have heard very little about him, (or her), on the television show. That may be about to change. With the threat of the White Walkers looming closer than ever, the identity of Azor Ahai is hugely important to Westeros and Essos and the lands beyond.
Eight thousand years ago the White Walkers invaded Westeros. In Westeros, the fictional continent that the majority of the action in Game of Thrones is set, the seasons are out of balance. Summers can last a decade and winters can last a lifetime. Eight thousand years ago there came a winter that lasted a generation. Babies were born and died beneath the blanket of winter.
In The World of Ice and Fire, a text on Westeros history, there are stories that winter was so thick upon Westeros that the sun was not seen for years at a time. And from the dark and the cold, they came. From the Land of Always Winter, the White Walkers attacked. A hero appeared to combat the White Walker threat, his name was Azor Ahai. It is prophesied that a hero will rise in the present, a reincarnation of Azor Ahai, to defeat the White Walkers again. We have likely already met the reincarnation of Azor Ahai. One of our characters has to be the hero who leads the charge in stopping the Others. The war against the White Walkers, the War for the Dawn, is coming. But how will we recognize this hero? Show SPOILERS and Minor Book SPOILERS follow.
The Signs of Azor Ahai
Azor Ahai is the champion sent by R’hallor, the Lord of Light whom Melisandre worships. But many other religions have variations on his coming. The Stallion Who Mounts the World, who Khal Drogo proclaimed his and Dany’s son to be, may be another form of the Azor Ahai legend. If he fails to stop the White Walkers the world fails with him. There are signs by which Azor Ahai reborn can be recognized…
Lightbringer: Azor Ahai will bear a red or burning sword that is hot to the touch. According to legend, Azor Ahai stabs his wife with it, infusing it with her soul. This sword could be more metaphorical and the sacrifice to create it may not be necessary. This could also just be a Valarian steel sword as these appear to disintegrate the White Walkers into little pieces.
Targaryen Blood: Azor Ahai will be born of the House Targaryen, and may have something to do with dragons
Born Amidst Salt and Smoke: This can also refer to rebirth or resurrection
Born Beneath a Bleeding Star: This could refer to the comet seen by many characters in Season 2
But this still leaves us with the question of who is the reincarnation of Azor Ahai? There are really only three strong possibilities…
