Free Wi-Fi for the Big Apple!

It’s New Year’s Eve in New York’s Time Square and the crowd is pumped, Ryan Seacrest is on stage counting down from 10 and the giant, lighted ball drops.

First, you grab your partner and plant a nice, big kiss on their lips and start to wish those around you a happy New Year. But, you have cousins in Maryland, an uncle in Australia, not to mention your friends in California who you would want to wish a happy New Year to as well.

But no matter which cell phone provider you have, everybody goes through the frustrating process of text messages getting backed up or failing to send because the networks are busy.

CNET.com reported that Skype is coming to the rescue to those who are bundling up to spend New Year’s in Time Square to be a part of ABC’s “New Year’s Rockin’ Eve.”

According to TheVerge.com, Skype will be working alongside Towerstream, a Wi-Fi provider, to offer 24 hours of free Wi-Fi to everyone from Union Square to Time Square from noon on Dec. 31 until Jan. 1.

Now you can connected with friends and family on New Year’s through video and phone calls, social networking sites or e-mail and stay connected!

CNET.com said in order to connect to the service, users must look for the “‘Skype WiFi’ network” and have the latest Skype version downloaded on Mac or PC devices.

According to TheVerge.com, these are the areas covered with free Wi-Fi: “Times Square, West Village, East Village, South Village, Greenwich Village, NoHo, SoHo, Lower East Side, Clinton, Chelsea, Union Square, Midtown, Midtown South, Murray Hill, Stuyvesant Park and Turtle Bay.”
