An unidentified Salt Lake City woman and her 17-month-old son, who were held hostage for nearly five days, were rescued Christmas Eve after she used Facebook as a means to call for help.
The Associated Press via Telegraph.co.uk reported the woman took her laptop and hid to post for help on Facebook. The post said she and her child would be “dead by morning” if help did not come.
A person on the woman’s Facebook account read the post and alerted the police.
AP reported that Sgt. Jon Arnold said, “Facebook was her only outlet that she had at the home. It just happened that she was able to use it.”
“Police arrested Troy Reed Critchfield, 33, and booked him on Saturday on charges of aggravated kidnapping, forcible sodomy, aggravated assault, domestic violence, child abuse, animal cruelty and other charges,” AP said.
Critchfiled pled guilty to another case related to domestic violence in December 2010, which prompted a judge to sentence Critchfield to 5 years in prison. However, Critchfield only served a 120 day jail term and 3 years of probation.
