Who are you and what do you do?
I’m Brendan Gahan and I’m the Director of Social Media at Mekanism. We’re a creative agency with offices in San Francisco and New York. We sprinkle our love of good storytelling into viral campaigns, branded entertainment and social media.
Where are you from?
I live in San Francisco, but I grew up in Ventura, California.
What do you like about social media?
I love the intersection of people and technology. It’s fun to balance the two and create a campaign that gets the two firing on all cylinders in a way that you truly ‘go viral’. Seeing our campaigns scale as a result of that cohesive strategy is extremely rewarding.
What is the most important lesson you have learned regarding new media?
With regards to developing social media campaigns I think its important to be different. You’re competing with the entire internet for people’s time and attention, so it’s important to have something new or unique to offer. Once you’ve landed on your concept, its important to launch big. Don’t be shy. Make a lot of noise when you launch something, or you’ll just get lost in the clutter.
What kind of advice would you offer someone trying to pursue social media as a profession?
If you’re looking to get a job in social media at an ad agency, I’d say there are three things you can do to help you land a job:
- If you’ve got an interview, know the agencies work inside and out (and be passionate about the work).
- Research the people behind the work you love and ask to take them out to coffee. People are accessible, especially if you flatter them. Also, meeting in real life is way more valuable than twitter.
- Be a self-starter. Even if you don’t have work experience, go out and create and experiment on your own.
