Summer is nearly upon us, and perhaps this realization has made you regret spending those cold winter months focusing on your favorite indoor activities like: trolling personal blogs, watching hours of viral video content, pairing witty sayings with your favorite photos of Ryan Gosling to attribute to his meme and other activities that are proof of time well spent.
However, when you emerged from your winter hibernation with an extra layer or two (I don’t mean sweaters) you may have realized that, perhaps you should have spent all that free time at the gym.
NOT to fear, NMR has a solution for you!(Mostly because we spent our winter just about the same way). We have come up with a list of five Free iPhone fitness apps that can help you catch up after a long workout-deprived winter.
My Fitness Pal is ideal for tracking your calorie intake. The app helps you set up a personal daily calorie goal by factoring in your current and goal weights. You track your daily intake by adding every bite, sip or snack to the food journal; which will deduct those calories consumed from your calorie allotment for the day. It has an extensive database of foods and allows you to choose the portion size so you know exactly how much you have consumed. Once you have completed the day’s entry the app will tell you if you have consumed too many or too few calories and let you know how much closer you are to your weight loss goal.
If you have seen the Biggest Loser you know that Jillian Michaels is the nightmare trainer with the rockin’ bod that you secretly wish you could afford. The same fitness and diet guru that whipped the contestants of the hit show into shape has created an app that can help you do the same. This app has both healthful recipes to follow and video workouts to try! It is the best of both worlds, it gives you videos of five circuit total-body workouts and recipes for three meals a day.
I love yoga, but going to the gym to relax by taking a yoga class seems to be counterintuitive at times: like when you are crammed in a group fitness room with thirty other gym goers and barely enough space to do a down dog. The Daily Yoga app just may be the answer to all your yoga woes. The app allows you to choose the duration of your workout as well as the level of expertise you are at in your practice. After selecting a workout, set your iphone down and follow the audio routine that the app provides.
This app is for every person who has always wanted to run a marathon but just cannot put down the chips and get off their couch. C25K stands for Couch to 5k, and gives you a day by day running routine that allows you to work up to running a 5k. You turn it on while you run and it tells you when to warm up, cool down, and pace yourself. It gradually increases the intensity of your workout to ease you into a running routine or even prepare you for that 5K you have always wanted to run.
I have heard many a trainer(yes, mostly on TV) say that abdominals can and should be worked out every day, because they recover the most quickly and require the most attention. I am a big fan of the 15- minute ab classes at the gym (because that is about all I can stand)…so when I found this app I was elated. It gives you a variety of ab workouts to try and routines to follow with an audio “trainer” to motivate you through the various exercises and reps. You can even choose an entire bootcamp ab routine if you are feeling ambitious.
