Reddit can be a great place, and sometimes it can be a place where ignorant people post ignorant things. What’s great about the phenomenon though, is that the ignorant get a swift kick in the ass when posting ignorant things on reddit.com.
Yesterday, a poster with the eloquent username “european_douchbag”, made a thread in r/funny titled: “I’m not sure what to conclude from this.” The post linked to a photo of a young woman at an airport with *gasp* facial hair! Usually, this image might elicit laughter from those sheltered enough to not know that women have hair in weird places too, but not in european_douchbag’s case.
That is because within a few hours of being posted on Reddit, Balpreet Kaur, the woman in the photograph, actually responded with a photo of her smiling and the following quote, “Yes, I’m a baptized Sikh woman with facial hair. Yes, I realize that my gender is often confused and I look different than most women. However, baptized Sikhs believe in the sacredness of this body – it is a gift that has been given to us by the Divine Being (which is genderless, actually) and, must keep it intact as a submission to the divine will.”
Just another example of how the Internet is self-correcting humanities’ knowledge and tolerance.
