You know you’re in for a Thanksgiving treat when a song contains the line: “Can’t be hateful, gotta be grateful, mashed potatoes on my table.”
The video for Nicole Westbrook’s “It’s Thanksgiving” starts off pleasantly enough — a fresh-faced tween is singing (and rapping!) an ode to her favorite food holiday as she and her fellow preteen friends get together for a Thanksgiving party. Then the older, out-of-place black guy pops up into the frame, and my first thought is, “Somebody call Chris Hansen!”
It’s obvious enough as to what the story behind this video is: The older chap is an aspiring music mogul. He’s not very good at it, but he knows enough to know a lot of money can be made from even terrible music. Ask Rebecca Black how much she hates living on a pile of money as you trudge off to your temp job at Radio Shack. So this cat recruits a tiny teenybopper and gives her the most unironically wholesome ditty that has been warbled in quite some time. Now you saps are lining up to the tune of 3.8 million viewers and counting.
As far as YouTube dollars go, this thing is on the cusp of being worth a mint. In fact, everyone involved is likely banking on the hope that you and all your friends from Ventura County to Viet Nam think this is the worst video since “Friday.” And then, because you all watch it, I gotta report on it. At least this girl can sing better than Rebecca Black, so there’s hopefully a chance it dies off before I have to do an article on the “Gangnam Style/It’s Thanksgiving” remix. But I fucking doubt it.
