Move over Yelp and Foursquare, Facebook’s trying to cash in on the location-based social networking game.
The social media giant will revamp its “Nearby” feature on its mobile apps to include a map showing local businesses and sorting them based on friends’ recommendations and “likes.” The revamped “Nearby” feature will be available in the latest Facebook app update starting today.
For instance, if you were looking for a place to eat, you could use the “Nearby” feature to list places in your area that your friends and other Facebook users “like.” If you want something more specific, you can search by clicking the “Places Nearby” button where you would be presented with businesses sorted by category or by another filter of your choosing.
Besides discovering new businesses and checking in using the “Nearby” feature on your smartphone, you can also share your thoughts by rating and recommending a business.
The improved “Nearby” feature could encourage Facebook users to check in more and find out which places and businesses their own friends may like. In turn, it would heat up the competition with Yelp and Foursquare, platforms that rely on recommendations and other data to provide location services for their users.
