Amazon Instant Video Picks Up Pilot For ‘Zombieland’ Series

The video-streaming sites are already ripe for competitive original content thanks to successful series like Netflix’s political drama “House of Cards” and the upcoming season of “Arrested Development.”

Now Amazon Instant Video is taking a page from the Netflix playbook and searching for their own hit original series. They’ve ordered a pilot for “Zombieland,” based on the 2009 hit adventure-comedy-horror flick starring Jesse Eisenberg and Woody Harrelson. While the two actors won’t reprise their roles this time around, the film’s original writers Rhett Rheese and Paul Wernick will return to produce the pilot. The lead cast includes Kirk Ward, Maiara Walsh, Tyler Ross and Izabela Vidovic.

Roy Price, director of Amazon Studio, told TechCrunch that “Zombieland” is a fan favorite and is hoping that the pilot will get enough attention to turn into a full series.

“Zombieland” will join six other comedy pilots and six pilots for children shows as part of Amazon Video’s original programming offerings. While 13 pilots are a huge offering for Amazon, not all of them will have their own series, and Amazon will select the few that will get a full season through customer feedback.

Besides producing original content, Amazon Instant Video has also bought the exclusive rights to stream the hit British period drama “Downtown Abbey” for seasons 4 and 5.
