YouTube network Machinima and acclaimed director Ridley Scott announced a partnership this afternoon. Scott and his production company, Ridley Scott Associates, in conjunction with Machinima will produce 12 short sci-fi films.
The partnership, as spoken about by Machinima CEO Allen DeBevoise in a press release, is expected to be a “unique incubation model.” Scott will act as an executive producer for the short films, and directors will be chosen by the legendary “Alien” director and RSA president Jules Daly in conjunction with Machinima executives.
It seems that Scott is looking towards the web when producing new projects, explaining in the press release: “With new media transforming the way audiences connect with films and filmmakers, Machinima is a great partner for us as we embark on this new model of delivering original content to fans.”
Scott’s association with Machinima is a massive boon for the multichannel network. The attraction that mainstream directors and producers have developed towards the web space is an incredible step in the right direction for digital video, as a blessing from Hollywood royalty like Scott could quickly sway any fence-walking film executives into seeing the broad appeal of web content.
