Full-time college student Riann Star has made a name for herself as the “Thrift Store Queen.” You know those girls, the ones that always have on the perfect outfit that when asked about will squeal, “I got it for $4 at a thrift store in L.A.!” She is someone whose closet you could get lost in and whose style always looks effortlessly chic.
Riann first began making fashion and beauty videos on YouTube in early 2011 as a way to practice her video skills for school and also talk about her favorite subject — fashion. Her channel is organized into types of videos including fashion lookbooks, beauty tutorials, and her most popular videos, thrift store hauls in which she shares with viewers her most recent thrift store finds. It is refreshing to watch a YouTube fashionista whose outfits are created from pieces that are both affordable — let me hear a cheer for thrifting — and chic. With an ever-evolving style, Riann hopes her channel encourages fashion lovers like herself to never stop having fun and to take risks with their style.
What is a thrift store item that you’ve bought that you can’t live without?
Riann Star: This is a super tough question! Even though I have some more impressive finds such as my vintage Gucci boots and Manolo Blahnik heels, my most worn piece is an oatmeal-colored oversized cardigan. It’s one of the few pieces that remains in my closet no matter the season. It feels like you’re wearing a blanket, which I love because I am always cold, and it goes with EVERYTHING!
If you could raid any celebrity’s closet, whose would you raid and what would you take?
Oh, hands down Olivia Palermo! Her style is on point! I wouldn’t really have to pay much attention as to what I grab, because I know every piece in her closet is amazing!
What is a major influence on your fashion? What inspires you to be creative?
My lifelong love for dress-up and theatre has definitely contributed to my style quite a bit. I feel myself wearing more daring pieces that could come off as “costumey” but I love the challenge of streamlining them into a wearable outfit. My mom also has influenced my style heavily; she always taught me to invest in pieces that are timeless and not to follow trends just because they’re popular.
What is your creative process like when filming for your channel?
My creative process depends on what kind of video I’m filming. I love filming lookbooks because they tend to be more planned out. I usually have to location scout, storyboard, and then film in an order that is easiest to change from one outfit to the next. Some videos, however, are more organic “sit down and talk” vlog-style videos. I love those too! It’s like I’m talking to my best friend!
What was the last book that you just read? What was the last movie that you saw?
I just re-read “The Great Gatsby” for the third time! I may or may not be researching for an upcoming project … As for the last movie I watched, I just yesterday watched “The Devil Wears Prada.” I re-watch it at least once every three months … I’m a little obsessed.
If your life could be set in any movie, which would you pick?
I’d say “Midnight in Paris.” I love the idea of being able to see Paris through different periods of time, plus it’s so charming! You’ve got to love Woody Allen.
What advice do you have for aspiring fashionistas looking to stand out on YouTube?
Honestly, it’s to wear what you really wear and be yourself. You’ll be happiest if your YouTube channel showcases your real life!
What has been the best part of being part of the Next Up program, and what have you learned along the way?
Being in the NextUp program has been so amazing on so many levels, but my favorite part has definitely been making friends with other creators. I’ve always found that no one understands YouTube creators quite like YouTube creators!
What are your future plans for your channel and for yourself?
In the future I hope to pursue filmmaking and broadcast journalism and, of course, to be involved in the fashion industry in some way. I’m so excited that my channel can meld all of my favorite things into one! I have a hard time defining where I am headed exactly, but I am so excited to find out what lies ahead for my channel!
About the piece:
Out of YouTube’s thousands of creator channels, 30 promising creators are picked every season to participate in the YouTube NextUp Creator program — a sort of Hogwarts Academy for the very best of the YouTube best. They spend a week training at the YouTube Creator Space in Los Angeles, attending seminars, learning advanced filming techniques and interacting with some of the YouTube greats. In short, it’s a pretty cool honor. Since YouTube thinks they’re worthy, NMR thinks you should know about them.
So we’re featuring the Winter 2013 class of Nextup participants — 2 a day for the next 15 days. Learn about these fresh faces, love their content and then subscribe to their channels, because these are the next generation of YouTube innovators.
