Happy 8th Birthday, YouTube: The 8 Videos That Helped Shape YouTube

1. “Jacuzzi Accident” — Nov. 22, 2006 ? 719,995

Here it is: the most important video on YouTube. It is neither the oldest, most viewed nor famous, but this clip (and a similar one of a monkey smelling poop on his finger) basically made YouTube. In its infancy, YouTube was by no means a guaranteed success. There wasn’t a plan in place for monetization and most people thought Google was foolish for buying the video site back in 2006. But most people didn’t know that a vid of a girl accidentally shitting in a jacuzzi was out there, on the horizon. Yes, like the “Blair Witch Project,” it turned out to be a hoax of sorts, but ask YouTube if they are complaining? This video (and the monkey poop one) made YouTube a destination for the youth of the world — the very same folks who now make YouTube the powerhouse of social media that it has become. Happy Birthday, YouTube. But stay out of the jacuzzi.
