Actor Sir Patrick Stewart, known for his roles in “X-Men” and “Star Trek,” has seen firsthand the devastation caused by domestic violence. Growing up in a poor English family following World War II, Stewart witnessed his father beat his mother year after year.“ As a child I witnessed his repeated violence against my mother, and the terror and misery he caused was such that, if I felt I could have succeeded, I would have killed him,” Stewart stated in an article for The Guardian in 2009. “If my mother had attempted it, I would have held him down. Violence is a choice a man makes and he alone is responsible for it.” While at the time he could do little to stop the violence, Stewart has spent his adult life speaking out against domestic abuse and supporting organizations such as Refuge that provide safe houses for abuse victims. The video above was filmed at this year’s Comicpalooza and captures Stewart’s passionate response to an audience member’s question about domestic violence.
