AOL has given viewers a first look at AOL On Originals, the company’s original web programming efforts that will feature 15 new series this fall starring some big names and a familiar face from YouTube.
Adweek reported that AOL announced the series earlier this week at NewFront and that they will feature the likes of Sarah Jessica, Jonathan Adler, Anthony Anderson and iJustine. One of the new AOL series, “Second Chances,” is produced by Ryan Seacrest Productions, which also announced a deal with Fullscreen to collaborate on content in the near future. Another, “Hardwired,” is hosted by iJustine and talks about the latest trends in technology.
CEO Tim Armstrong noted the importance of web videos during AOL’s NewFront presentation: “The growth in video is the most important trend that we need to pay attention to [on the internet]. And quality premium web video is the most scarce thing in the universe.”
AOL is best known as an internet service provider, but in the past few years, the company has shifted towards producing content for the web through websites like TechCrunch and The Huffington Post (Full disclosure: I was once a freelancer for one of AOL’s properties). AOL’s entrance into the digital entertainment market comes at a time when Hollywood is looking at sites like YouTube and Vimeo to produce and distribute their content.
