There is a weird disconnect between my thought process and articles like these — see, I spent all day most days talking about how YouTube is fast becoming the pinnacle, the peak, the penultimate of entertainment. And then, in the next moment, I have to go and write an article like this one (or the last one about the singing Filipino boy on “Ellen”) in which I mention some YouTuber who has gone off and achieved “actual success.” See, as much as I hate to admit it, Jenna Marbles would probably kill to have a TV show on the Travel Channel, and that tells me we’ve still got a long way to go.
But Daymon Patterson, a colorful (I mean his personality here — it just also happens that he is black) food reviewer on YouTube just got recruited to create a show for the Travel Channel in which he drives around the country sampling the best take-out food America has to offer. He is most well known for his Five Guys review, which went viral to the tune of 3.5 million views.
Daymon is a fun character, full of verbose exclamations and a sort of vocal range and street patois that are not typically found in the same persona. The tatted-up guy looks like he could be a bouncer, and yet, in one episode of his YouTube show “Daym Drops,” he serenades a milkshake. I think the Travel Channel made a great call on this one.
The show, called “Best Daym Takeout,” does not yet have a release date, but you can be sure I will be glued to the Travel Channel everyday just in case it does debut.
