The Newest Star on Instagram: The President of Chechnya?

World leaders are increasingly turning to social media to communicate with their countries’ citizens, but Chechen president Ramzan Kadyrov has seemed to take it a step further.

The leader of the Russian region, which is better known as the birthplace of the Boston Marathon bombers Tamerlan and Dzokhar Tsarnayev, has an unusually large following on Instagram. Kadyrov’s account features photos of him doing random things like cuddling tigers, riding a golden stag statue and meeting with government officials.

Kadyrov especially likes to show off his visiting Hollywood friends to the 142,000 Instagram users who follow his account. In one of his latest posts, three of Kadyrov’s boys pose with smiling action star Steven Seagal. Another photo features the Chechen leader posing with actress Elizabeth Hurley and her tiny white kitten.

While Kadyrov may show love for little white kittens on his Instagram, he’s not always the lovable smiling leader that he portrays himself to be in his Instagram account. Since he took over as President of Chechnya in 2007, he has been accused of human rights abuses against opponents of his government.
