Here’s a question that’s easy to answer: who said this often tweeted and Facebooked quote: “I mourn the loss of thousands of precious lives, but I will not rejoice in the death of one, not even an enemy.” Was it (a) Martin Luther King, Jr. (b) Some 24-year-old English teacher or (c) Mahatma Gandhi?
If you guessed “a,” then you are likely one of the thousands of people who misattributed a quote from a 24-year-old English teacher to the civil rights leader in the days after Osama Bin Laden’s death in May 2011.
Misattributed quotes are the latest subject of this week’s Mental Floss viral series hosted by Vlog Brother John Green. Other notable misquotes that Green points out include that Machiavelli never said “The ends justify the means” and that Hannibal Lecter in “Silence of the Lambs” never said “Hello, Clarice” but “Good evening, Clarice.”
