Each day when he wakes up, 5-year-old Alonso Mateo strolls into his walk-in closet with his stylist mother, Luisa Fernanda Espinosa, and chooses an outfit from the racks of Dior, Gucci, Stella McCartney, Bon Point, Nordstrom, Little Marc Jacobs and Dolce & Gabbana at his disposal. Envious yet?
Last year Alonso’s mother first started posting pictures of her son’s outfits on Instagram, and since that time the pint-sized trend setter has gathered an audience of over 129,000 followers. Born in Monterrey, Mexico, Alonso and his family recently moved to Laguna Beach where his mother works as a freelance stylist and his father is the owner and CEO of a private equity firm.
“I love suits, sneakers and sunglasses,” Alfonso stated in an article for the Cut. “I like to dress like my dad, because he has cool suits.” While some people are using Alfonso’s outfits as their own style guides, many critics have flagged his photos commenting that he is too young to be interested in designer labels.
“I think people usually judge right away. When we go shopping, if he wants loafers just like his daddy and I can afford them, I get them,” comments Alfonso’s mother. “We’re fine raising our son. He’s always polite, he’s grounded, he’s a sweet boy. I don’t know if it’s because he’s an only child and he’s surrounded by so many grown-ups that he kind of wants to replicate what everybody around him is wearing? I don’t think he really notices he’s fashion forward. He’s too young.”
