While the San Antonio Spurs and the Miami Heat are fighting it out for the NBA Championship, the league honored the best in basketball social media at Wednesday night’s 2013 NBA Social Media Awards.
The awards celebrated players who make a great impact outside of the game and those who get fans excited about basketball through their social media following. Here’s a rundown of the winners from last night’s event.
Epic Award: Miami Heat vs. Boston Celtics’ March 18 game
With a great storyline of two teams that detest each other and an individual battle between LeBron James and Jeff Green, the Heat vs. Celtics game was awarded as the best game of the season.
FTW Award: Milwaukee Bucks’ Monta Ellis
Milwaukee’s shooting guard won this award which celebrates the best game-winning shot of the season. Ellis made the winning shot in the last seconds of the February 27 Bucks-Rockets game.
Snapshot Award: Dwight Howard and Kobe Bryant’s Twitter Pic
The Lakers’ Howard and Bryant won this award for their viral Twitter pic featuring the two pretending to fight each other as Coach Mike D’Antoni tries to separate the two.
140 Award: Kobe Bryant
Bryant won this award for sending out the best tweet of the year. The longtime Lakers shooting guard has more than 2.7 million followers on the microblogging site.
Trendsetter Award: OKC Thunder’s Russell Westbrook
Westbrook is known off the court for his eccentric fashions and ridiculous outfits, which is why the NBA gave him the award for best fashion.
OMG Award: Miami Heat’s version of the “Harlem Shake”
The “Harlem Shake” may be a distant memory, but the NBA hasn’t forgotten the Heat’s rendition of the insanely viral fad when giving out this year’s OMG Award for best team video.
LOL Award: Denver Nuggets’ Javale McGee
The NBA awarded the Nuggets’ center for his on-court antics, including his hilarious fall during the Dec. 7 game against the Indiana Pacers.
Social MVP Award: Kobe Bryant
Bryant beat out LeBron James, Chris Paul, Blake Griffin and Steph Curry for this award, which honors the best contributions to social media by NBA players.
Social Slam Award: LA Clippers’ DeAndre Jordan
The NBA awarded Jordan for the most-talked about dunk of the season during the March 10 game against the Detroit Pistons.
Social Difference Award: LA Lakers’ Pau Gasol
Gasol garnered the Social Difference Award for using his social media presence towards community projects.
Social Rookie Award: Portland Trail Blazers’ Damian Lillard
The NBA honored the rookie for his growing social media influence. Lillard, who has more than 188,000 followers on Twitter and 106,000 likes on Facebook, is also the NBA’S Rookie of the Year.
