A recent Cheerios commercial featuring an interracial couple has been the talk of YouTube not only because of its heartwarming message and its 3 million views, but also because of the vile and racist comments towards the fictional family. The Huffington Post found that some commenters found the commercial to be “disgusting” because of the interracial family, and others made references to Nazis and racial genocide. The unfounded backlash prompted Cheerios to disable comments on the video.
In response to the unusual and unnecessary backlash against the Cheerios commercial, an Atlanta couple decided to create a Tumblr dedicated to showing that interracial couples are just like everyone else. Michael David Murphy and Alyson West created the “We Are The 15 Percent” Tumblr that features heartwarming family photos compiled from submissions sent from around the United States.
Murphy and West described the purpose of the Tumblr: “We created this site to publicly reflect the changing face of the American family. According to the 2008 census, 15% of new marriages are interracial. And yet, it still feels rare to see something like the Cheerios ad represented in mainstream culture.”
