A week ago, I was calling for the use of dashboard cameras in American cars (the maneuver is pretty standard in Russia), but now that I’ve seen it, I’m not so sure.
Bad Drivers of Napa, a YouTube channel devoted to outing the misdeeds of other drivers, is starting to make some viral strides, and admittedly, there is something addicting and voyeuristic about being subjected to clip after clip of people making bad choices, not keeping up with “the flow of traffic” or outright being assholes. And yet, there is something petty and vigilante-ish about filming and broadcasting it that I don’t like.
For starters, you can hear this driver is the kind of easily enraged, lean-on-their-horn-heavily-and-often sort, the type of person who is so fed up with infractions that they have taken to “publicly shaming” their neighbors and fellow motorists. Particularly when, as CHP Officer Brad Sadek points out, the guy sometimes has to drive like an asshole to catch other assholes. “I think he could drive a bit more courteously. I don’t want to call him a jerk. But I think it’s important that we all drive courteously,” Sadek said.
It’s like the popular Jeff Lebowski meme: “You’re not wrong, you’re just an asshole.”
