To be fair, I’ve never really thought of Mos Def as an actor.
To be fairer, I’ve never really thought of Mos Def. But now that he’s made this viral video about the force-feeding of hunger strike prisoners in Guantanamo Bay, he’s on my radar and we’re both worse off for it.
Mos Def, who now goes by his Muslim name, Yasiin Bey (hmm, I always thought “Mos Def” was his Muslim name), filmed a short YouTube vid in which he subjects himself to the same method of feeding hunger strike prisoners currently serving in Guantanamo Bay are currently undergoing. Of course, Bey, who is seen strapped to a chair, apparently decides that the video isn’t exactly visually shocking enough and so he starts twitching, shrieking and sobbing with the same conviction that helped make “Be Kind Rewind” and “The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy” critical and/or financial successes. Nic Cage gave a better performance while watching that snuff film in “8mm.”
Overall, I approve of hunger strikes. I like that the common man has a method to voice his dissent — it worked for Ghandi. But seeing Yasiin Bey’s whiny-ass actor attempt to shed some PR towards his brothers-behind-bars, I found myself going, “Hey, if I could feed myself that way, I wouldn’t have to play video games with one hand.”
