‘Epic Rap Battles of History’ Gets Certified Gold For Their ‘Barack Obama vs. Mitt Romney’ Video

Maker Studios’ “Epic Rap Battles of History” is writing one for the history books by being the first YouTube channel to snag a Gold certification by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA).

Billboard reported that Nice Peter and Epic Lloyd’s song “Barack Obama vs. Mitt Romney” has earned the distinction thanks to the video’s 71 million views on YouTube. The RIAA implemented new rules in May, which included video streams into their Gold & Platinum Program. This meant that according to their ranking system, 100 views on YouTube is equal to a single physical copy or digital download.

The new rules have helped Justin Bieber’s “Baby” reach the RIAA’s highest certification ever — 12 times Multi-Platinum.
For a song to get Gold certification, it must sell 500,000 units while Platinum certification requires 1 million units.

“Epic Rap Battles of History” has nearly 7 million subscribers and over 1.2 billion video views, according to their YouTube page. Potential videos from ERB that could be certified Gold in the future are their “Steve Jobs vs. Bill Gates,” “Master Chef vs. Leonidas,” “Hitler vs. Vader” and “Mario Bros. vs. Wright Bros.” videos.
