Today’s candidate for the most racist YouTube video of all time goes to L.A. boy band Day Above Ground’s latest music video, “Asian Gurlz.”
As the title suggests, the song is about one guy’s love for Asian girls, though what makes it racist is the basic, unflattering stereotypes of Asian people, such as how “slanted” their eyes are and their use of “Engrish.” The video features the band in a bird cage while a tattooed Asian-American model seductively undressing and dancing for them.
For a taste of just how insanely offensive the song is, it has lyrics like: “I love your creamy yellow thighs/Ooh you’re slanted eyes/It’s the Year of the Dragon/Ninja pussy I’m stabbin’.” The list of stereotypes goes on and on and it doesn’t help that the band’s musical capabilities are tone-deaf and cringe-worthy.
Day Above Ground addressed the controversy in a statement: “Our song “Asian Girlz” was not written with any malicious, hateful, or hurtful intent. We know it is racy and does push the boundaries further than other songs out there. Understand that we do not promote or support racism or violence. We love everyone no matter what race, religion, or sexual orientation. Please respect our decision to delete any violent, insensitive, or hurtful comment and also one that supports racism. We hope that we can continue with our lives with much love and peace.”
Still, the “Asian Gurlz” video joins the KTVU racist news station prank as one of the racist YouTube videos of all time.
