On Friday, 37-year-old Dallas resident Kariasa Thomas was arrested and charged with reckless injury to a child after 3-year-old Kanyce Giddings drowned while under Thomas’ care.
Just weeks before, Thomas had taken her legally blind husband, her 16-year-old daughter and her best friend’s four children swimming at her apartment’s pool. Though the group arrived after the pool was closed, Thomas and her group decided to stay due to the large amount of people still swimming. Thomas was well aware that 3-year-old Kanyce was unable to swim and told the child to stand on the pool’s steps to watch her siblings in the water.
Instead of watching the child from her recliner chair, Thomas logged into Facebook for nearly 15 minutes before she was told by the apartment’s security guard that the pool was closed. As she rounded up the children, Thomas was unable to find Kanyce and asked the guard for his flashlight to search for the child. Police reports later state that Thomas approached the pool and kicked the drowned child’s body. She handed the child over to the guard who then began performed CPR while emergency services were called. Kanyce was taken to Methodist Charlton Medical Center where she was pronounced dead. Thomas is currently residing in Dallas County jail with a bail of $25,000.

[…] We happen to be a big fan of cops (highway patrol — that’s a whole different story), so it’s tough for us to get behind every single police “brutality” video that comes out. The internet is grabbing their torches and pitchforks and calling for justice over this video footage of a man who was arrested over allegedly not paying a ticket to ride the bus. Now the man says he did in fact have a ticket, and if that’s the case, these cops have a lot of explaining to do. If he doesn’t, the footage is nowhere near aggressive enough to warrant a viral outcry. […]
