Vine made the announcement via Twitter: “We’ve said this before and we’ll say it again: this community – now more than 40 million of you – is amazing. Thank you for inspiring us.”
Before Vine released its app for Android users in June, it counted 13 million registered users. At the same time, Instagram introduced a video feature with longer record times and filters, which threatened Vine’s monopoly on the short video market. The addition of Instagram hasn’t slowed Vine’s growth, and the app has introduced channels and re-vines as part of its early July update.
Originally launched on the iPhone and iPad in January, Vine lets smartphone users record six-second snippets and then share them with their friends on social media networks. Since its launch, many Vines have reached viral success like Will Sasso’s Arnold Schwarzenegger driving series and “Ryan Gosling Won’t Eat His Cereal.”
