The Whistle Network trumpeted itself in a press release today as “a first of its kind multi-channel YouTube sports network built to engage and activate the new generation of fans and athletes.”
That “new generation,” of course, are YouTube-viewing youth. And those youth seem to already be on board, as the network has over 2 million subscribers spread out over its initial network of 14 channels. Among the Whistle Network’s original partners are YouTube sports power players Dude Perfect, who announced the news at the end of their latest video:
While success is never guaranteed, the Whistle seems to at least have a good chance to make some waves: its owners include the NFL, NASCAR, the PGA Tour and various other sports leagues. Investors include sports stars like Derek Jeter, Peyton Manning and Mia Hamm and former cable channel heads from MTV, Nickelodeon and Oxygen. Finally, ex-YouTube employees who worked with the platform’s sports content make up most of the Whistle Network’s executive team.
Whistle Network head of content partnerships Julie Kikla said: “We looked across the existing spectrum of options for content creators who wanted to engage a broader audience and saw that the large-scale leveraging that had been happening in areas like gaming, music, food and other fields had to yet to happen in sports. TWN gives compelling sports content creators the chance to grow across all media platforms with the help of The Whistle’s tools, resources, and insider access to the sports community.”
