Pocket Physician is Indiegogo Campaign With A Lionheart [Metaphorically, Of Course]

Most of the time I just tear pop culture and new media a “new one” so every once in a while it feels good to be able to promote some positive aspect of social living … actually, I feel like I’ve said a lot of nice stuff lately, so the hell with that. I’ll still be nice right now, but still a tiny bit mean.

There’s a pretty interesting little Indiegogo campaign I think you should know about. It’s for an app called the Pocket Physician (if you didn’t read the headline, then this is a surprise for you). It concerns a cute little kid named Landen with a heart condition. He wasn’t expected to live past his first birthday, but he ended up with a heart transplant that has kept him going strong. But he still has a lot of health issues and his parents, Joe and Tammy Bowers, have come up with a method of keeping track of his health — and guess what? It can help you too! Don’t blame these sweet people for their slow, leaden reading of the teleprompter in the video below — they’re concerned parents and software developers — not actors.

You can read more about Landen’s story, but if that doesn’t move you, here are some statistics that should make you think about those Slim Jims you call arteries:

-1 in 3 adults have high blood pressure and only ½ have it under control
-Over 500,000 people in the United States rely on feeding tubes for survival
-116 million Americans regularly experience chronic pain, including the 36 million Americans who suffer from migraines
-1 in 100 babies born each year have a congenital heart condition
-26 million Americans have diabetes, and 79 million Americans have prediabetes
-1 in 300 boys and 1 in 333 girls will be diagnosed with cancer before their 20th birthday
-1 in 26 Americans will suffer from epilepsy sometime during their lifetime
-70% of the US population takes prescription medication

Now here’s what it does:

-HIPAA Compliant, including secure login
-Organize and track 3+ people
-Medical Records Drop Box
-Notes section
-Track and record more than 10 vital indicators (including vital signs, medical events, behaviors and nutrition)
-Chart, graph and cross-reference tracking
-Stopwatch and video record to aid in tracking
-Alarms, track and logs medications (never forget or give the same medication twice)
-Send notes and information to your doctor
-Keep track of billing information
-Track medical expenses (great for taxes)
-Send information to insurance providers
-Pro-plus allows additional caregiver access for teachers, babysitters, etc…
-Store reference material on special conditions
-Specialty features available such as special growth charts and feeding tube options
-Download features applicable to you (make this YOUR app)
-Keep vital data in one convenient place

Sound good? Don’t waste time telling me — go to Indiegogo and help this thing get made.
