Alright, I’ve got my tuxedo on, my microphone plugged in and I’m ready to hit the red carpet and interview some celebrities at this year’s 4th annual Streamy Awards … wait a second, did NMR miss the Streamys?!
The Streamys, a celebration of all things digital video, glorious signifier of relevance on YouTube, have disappeared into the abyss — and without even an utterance of “Rosebud.” The site, which still advertises an air date of February 17 (2013? 2014?), looks like a shuttered amusement park — all faded glitz and spectacular promises of an era long since past.
Everyone else seemed primed for what their Twitter page calls a celebration “of online video and the people who make it.” One page was even all set to roll out the winners — a cavalcade of who’s who from the land of you. But those names aren’t going to be filled in. And that Twitter page we spoke of, it hasn’t been updated since August 15.
So what happened? Your guess is as good as mine.
NMR attempted to reach out to event organizers Drew Baldwin and Dick Clark Productions, but so far neither camp has reached back and, frankly, it’s almost time to start speculating about alien abduction or zombies. Obviously, we’re disappointed. Last year had performances by Vanilla Ice and Soulja Boy — one could only froth in anticipation at this year’s crop of digital entertainers that would grace the stage.
Of course, there’s been a hiccup before … the Streamys took a year off between their 2nd and 3rd show (“If you’re gonna do something, by gum, do it right,” I believe is how the expression goes), due to “technical issues.” So hopefully they’re back next year.
In the meantime, I’ll take my tuxedo back to Sears, pile the dust back on my microphone and hope for a brighter tomorrow.
Here’s some happy news to counterbalance the sad:
