Darn it, YouTube, you got our hopes up again. Last year, NMR thought we were finally going to have a definitive answer to the number 1 YouTube video of all time (screaming goats for the win). And now this year, we were already brainstorming out crispy ideas for your #newtrends project (our first one was to get everyone in videos to start saying “crispy” to describe awesome things), when we realized you were just joking. Friggin’ April Fool’s!
But seriously, I think people fall into two camps with videos released on April Fool’s Day. There are those who are like, “I think this is an April Fools Day prank” and then there are those aggressive types who feel the need to “inform” everyone. “April Fool’s Day prank, everyone! This is an April Fool’s Day prank.” I don’t think anybody actually goes, “Wait, YouTube thinks they can program memes in advance? They are out of their minds!”
For whatever reason, April Fool’s Day has become sacrosanct to the big media companies and they feel compelled to do SOMETHING each year for it. Are we complaining? Gosh no, especially not over YouTube, who puts so much effort into it. So let’s not worry whether the video YouTube releases on April Fool’s Day is real or not; let’s just accept it as fake and judge it on merit. I hope they are already planning next year’s prank because NMR is certainly looking forward to it already.
Here are some other pranks in video format:
