I thought LeVar Burton was being pretty full of himself when he filmed a Kickstarter video showing children and adults alike, mouth agape, absolutely dazzled at encountering the “Reading Rainbow” host. These people couldn’t be more surprised if Jesus Christ walked in with an AK-47 and started “redecorating” the place.
But considering that Burton’s pitch on Kickstarter for a reiteration of “Reading Rainbow” has allocated over $2 million in just a few hours, clearly I am mistaken. Levar Burton and “Reading Rainbow” are clearly absolute pop culture treasures. This of course is GREAT news for authors, as kids and adults should get back to reading brilliant books like “The Dead Janitors Club” or the forthcoming “L.A. Rotten” (editorial cough).
The Kickstarter launched yesterday with the intention of raising $1 million. Now it is well over $2 million in funding and the clicker is still ticking perceptibly upward. It’s as if people are sending a message that we need to get back to reading! (suck it, board games)
As Levar says in his Kickstarter message: “I believe that every child has a right, and a need, to be literate. We have a responsibility to prepare our children… and right now, the numbers show that we, as a society, are failing in that responsibility. And here’s the problem: Right now, 1 out of every 4 children in America will grow up illiterate.”
Damn, we need “Reading Rainbow” back, stat. Fortunately, thanks to the contribution of viewers like you, we’re going to get it.
