Woman’s YouTube Video of Her Own Abortion Procedure Goes Viral

A viral abortion video is causing waves of astonishment, ambivalence and disgust across the internet landscape.

The viral sensation “Emily’s Abortion Video” gained widespread attention through a Cosmopolitan article written by the video’s star, Emily Letts, titled “Why I Filmed My Abortion.” Letts, 25, is an abortion counselor at the Cherry Hill’s Women Center in New Jersey. When she found herself pregnant in Nov., she decided to create a non-graphic video in order to showcase a woman’s firsthand experience of an abortion, telling Cosmo, “I think that there are just no positive abortion stories on video for everyone to see. But mine is.”

Although “Emily’s Abortion Video” was published to YouTube March 14 of this year, it wasn’t until Cosmopolitan tweeted Emily’s exposé the morning of May 6 that the video reached viral popularity. Within seven hours of Cosmo’s tweet, “Emily’s Abortion Video” gained over 50,000 views on YouTube and has steadily grown since. To say the least, this controversial video has sparked heated dialogue amongst its viewers.
