If you can only go to VidCon for one day, make it Friday. The lion’s share of the great panels are on the first community day (with the exception of the greatest VidCon panel of all time on Saturday: see our Day Two list tomorrow for that one). God, there are even honorable mentions for this list such as the Writing Comedy For YouTube panel (which I will be sitting in on for sure). But we could only choose five and so here they are — the best five panels for VidCon 2014: Day One!
5. The Leap of Faith — Friday — 9:30 am -10:30 am
4. Making People Smarter Through Online Video — Friday — 9:30 am – 10:30 am
Ooh, two good panels at the same time. Decisions decisions … making money or growing your audiences brains? You know NMR chooses making money every time, but we are superficial, shallow and plan to spend the next 60 years sitting on a couch in our underwear. Don’t be like us — choose this panel.
3. Working For A YouTuber — Friday — 11:00am – 12:00 pm
We can’t all be Chip Chocolate. Some of us have to be the guy who holds the camera, refills the milk and fetches his dry-cleaning. But there is glory in that role as well … and a paycheck. Find out what it takes to be the person behind the person in this likely fascinating panel.
2. The Life of the Independent
Wow, Hank Green, co-founder of VidCon, will be sitting in on this panel. Listening, judging, pontificating. I’d hate to be the moderator here (poor son of a b*tch); knowing that you will have the eyes of Doctor T.J. Eckleburg upon you … whew. But this panel will have Grace Helbig on it — so finally we will get the answer to why she left My Damn Channel to be an independent and then quickly signed with Fullscreen. Oooh.
1. Striving to Be Sustainable — Friday — 3:30 pm – 4:30 pm
Like I said — Friday is the day for VidCon. This panel should be a fascinating look at sustaining a career as a YouTuber. Any ol’ schlub can make a viral video. How do you do it over and over again for years? Olga Kay is going to help get us answers to that daunting query. And as the last panel series of the day, that means we’re free to head on into the after parties!
