If you’ve been pining for more of “The Lizzie Bennet Diaries” since the popular web series wrapped up in early 2013 then today is your lucky day. The long anticipated novel adaptation, “The Secret Diary of Lizzie Bennet,” was released last night on Amazon. Diehard fans who have been sustaining themselves on fan fiction can rest assured that “The Secret Diary” expands the canon world of the original series and features the work of series creators Bernie Su and Kate Rorick.
There’s something oddly circular about turning “Lizzie Bennet” into a novel considering that the web series itself was adapted from Jane Austen’s classic “Pride and Prejudice.” Still, the creators promise that “Secret Diary” will be a faithful adaptation of the web series that will both engross new readers and provide enough new information to satisfy faithful fans.
Initial reviews from those who downloaded “The Secret Diary of Lizzie Bennet” at midnight appear to be mixed but positive. Some reviewers worry that the book feels too much like fan fiction or that the co-authors would try too hard to wedge new content into scenes that were already well balanced. While reviews from early readers are mixed, ratings appear strong with the “Secret Diary” earning a comfortable 4 star average on Amazon and 4.2 stars on Goodreads. Early readers, even those with qualms about the novel’s pacing and style, made note of the characters’ authentic voices, attributable to the involvement of series creators Su and Rorick.
