The Westboro Baptist Church hasn’t realized that it died when its pastor/founder Fred Phelps did. Its relevance has slipped, its mission statement has become muddy, and if media people like myself would ever get our collective thumbs out of our asses, we’d never ever have to hear about these obnoxious assholes ever again. But for some reason, we persist in bringing you their message of hate.
On Aug. 12, The WBC plans to picket outside Reddit HQ in San Francisco over the anniversary of the death of Reddit co-founder and social activist Aaron Swartz, who killed himself in the midst of a legal scrum. Additional protest plans have been set for other media companies that day, including Apple and Pinterest, but the real irony is that in addition to protesting Reddit, the WBC will be hosting an AMA (Ask Me Anything) on the site at 2 p.m. on Aug. 10 to discuss said protest.
According to a WBC press release: “Reddit was co-founded by prominent member of Anonymous and cyber criminal Aaron Swartz. Swartz was a poster boy for this online community: a fag, an atheist and a thief. Last year, he killed himself when he was finally caught and charges filed against him for his crimes.”
“Westboro Baptist Church will use the Reddit platform, which is usually filled with vanity, science falsely so-called, and other sundry lies; (sic) to instead preach righteousness & spread the gospel.”
I would love to go out there and spread the gospel of roundhouse kicks. Fortunately Reddit seems to have their head on straight about all of this:
