At this year’s New Fronts, PBS Digital Studios made their debut and promised that the public television network would be jumping into original web content in a big way. Now they’re ready to follow through in a big way with the release of “Frankenstein M.D.,” from Pemberley Digital and literary web series auteur Bernie Su.
If you want to make a splash in the web series world then there are few creators more qualified than Bernie Su. His resume already includes the Emmy-nominated “Lizzie Bennett Diaries” and the critically acclaimed “Emma Approved,” both produced in association with Hank Green’s Pemberley Digital. Both smash hit series were created by adapting classic literature, the novels of Jane Austen, to a modern setting. Su is a pro at teasing out the timeless elements of classic stories and casting them in a modern light.
“Frankenstein M.D.” will be a return to form, remixing elements from Mary Shelley’s classic “Frankenstein” with modern themes. The series will follow protagonist Victoria Frankenstein, described as an “obsessive, eccentric prodigy determined to prove herself in the male-dominated fields of science and medicine.” Dynamic female protagonists are a recurring theme in Su’s work, which has been praised in particular for its treatment of women in key roles.
The series will be PBS Digital’s most high profile foray into original content to date. The digital arm of public television made its online video debut at last year’s New Fronts promising a slate of original programming as well as archived television content released via YouTube, Roku and PBS.com. Partnering with Bernie Su and the proven content creators at Pemberley Digital shows how committed PBS is to reaching online audiences through its digital venture.
The first episode will go live Tuesday August 19. Episodes will be released weekly until the series finale which is appropriately slated for Halloween!
