When Do YouTube And Television Coexist Equally? Or Do They Ever?

I keep wanting to do a think piece about how the wall has finally crumbled between YouTube and television — after all, we have YouTubers popping up in Taco Bell commercials, Lifetime movies, late night programming and signing deals to develop shows. But then we get stuff like this episode of “Just Keke” on BET featuring Superwoman and Kingsley. The focus of the show was shock and awe over how YouTubers can in fact make a living off what they are doing. And the audience seemed awestruck by it.

Clearly we are still not at a place of industry legitimacy yet — but the walls are eroding (if not slower than I would like). I notice the slow-to-take-hold mentality in my day-to-day life as well. Whenever I am at some function and some small talker wants to know what I do, I find myself in the unenviable position of having to explain that YouTube has an incredible, vast and sustainable subculture and that I am not “some moron out wasting my time” covering it. I want this industry to thrive because I believe the future of entertainment will almost entirely come from its niches. From the singers and the dancers and the vloggers and the actors to the creepypasta writers, the directors and the visual poets.

What do you people think? Is the world moving at the speed with which it needs to for it to be eventually considered mainstream? Or is there a way of making YouTube and its potential move faster? Or do we want it to stay away from Hollywood and be its own entity altogether?
