YouTuber Anna Akana Is Headed to the Big Screen

Another YouTuber is making the jump to the big-screen. Actress-vlogger-podcast host and extensive entertainment multihyphenate Anna Akana is joining the cast of indie film “Hello, My Name is Doris.” Anna will star opposite Academy Award-winner Sally Field and “The New Girl’s” Max Greenfield in the indie comedy written and directed by Michael Showalter (“Wet Hot American Summer”).

Akana’s character will hew fairly close to life as she plays a blogger who follows Field’s character as she romantically pursues a younger co-worker. Anna is obviously a seasoned veteran of the internet, but we can surmise that it was her wide array of media accomplishments that netted her the role. Her personal YouTube channel has over 900,000 subscribers and has accumulated just under 69 million views. In addition to being a talented actress, seen most recently in her web series “Riley Rewind,” Akana is also a writer, producer and co-host of the popular “Runaway Thoughts” podcast.

Akana joins a growing list of YouTubers who are jumping into film and television: Akana’s ex Ray William Johnson is currently filming the indie “Who’s Driving Doug”; Grace Helbig, Mamrie Hart and Hannah Hart recently wrapped on “Camp Takota”; and Shane Dawson recently completed a film for the STARZ network and is currently developing a sitcom for NBC. Akana is also one of the 14 YouTube creators tapped by Ron Howard’s digital studio, New Form Digital, to produce a 10-minute short film.
