Move over, K-pop. A-pop is the new rising star from down under on YouTube.
Now in 2014, YouTube is seeing a similar trend with the rise of Australian-based musicians such as Troye Sivan, 5 Seconds of Summer, Sia, Cody Simpson, Janoskians blowing up on YouTube and in pop music overall. In fact, 2014 is the first time since the 1980’s that Aussie musicians are charting in the top 10.
Searches for these artists are also skyrocketing on YouTube.
Is this the beginning of the rise of A-pop? Here are some Aussie artists defining this trend:
Troye Sivan (2.5 million subscribers) – YouTuber-turned-major label recording artist has been viewed more than 112+ million times on YouTube. Sivan released his EP “TRXYE” on August 15, and his first music video has 1.6 million views within a week. The EP was preceded by the release of the singles “The Fault in Our Stars” and “Happy Little Pill.”
Sia (456k subscribers) – Her Chandelier video has generated 97+ million views since launching in May. Her performance of the music video on Ellen has 8 million views, the performance on Jimmy Kimmel has 2+ million views, and almost 2 million views on Seth Meyers. Sia’s even compiled a video of other people doing her dance, and YouTube starMadelyn Bailey’s version has over 2 million views and charted on iTunes. The lyric video also has 10+ million views.
Iggy Azalea (124k subscribers) – Azalea first gained recognition after the respective music videos for her controversial songs “Pu$$y” and “Two Times” went viral on YouTube. Her debut studio album “The New Classic” was finally released in April 2014, under Virgin EMI and Def Jam Recordings. The album features singles Fancy (2.4+ million views) and Change Your Life (492k views). Azalea’s Vevo channel launched in 2013 (1.5+ million subs).
5 Seconds of Summer (1.5 million subscribers) – Their hit “Amnesia” has more than 10 million views within a month of release, with more than 142+ million overall views on their videos.
Cody Simpson (950k subscribers) – Simpson’s music career began in 2009 when he started recording his own versions of songs on YouTube by Justin Timberlake and Jason Mraz. Now signed with Atlantic Records, Simpson’s videos rack up millions of views: All Day (27+ million views), Pretty Brown Eyes (20+ million views), Summertime (12+ million views), On My Mind(24+ million views).
Janoskians (1.6 million subscribers) – Have their own channel on AwesomenessTV with over 500k subscribers and their most recent music video Real Girls Eat Cake has over over 4 million views since launching in May.
Other A-pop stars on the rise include Matt Corby, The Jezabels, Emma Louise, Gossling, and Lisa Mitchell.
