Meet The 2014 Geekie Award Nominees: Indie Geekdom’s Finest

Levar

We are on the verge of a truly momentous event, my friends. The second annual Geekie Awards are upon us and they are going to be truly epic. The Geekies were established in 2013 to honor the best independent creators in geek culture with categories ranging from Best Cosplay to Best Web Series. The Geekies specialize in tracking down the finest indie geek creators and showering them with glory. The nominees were announced back in July by YouTube’s own Olga Kay, and on Saturday, August 17 the winners will be crowned.

A group of 70 expert judges have been empaneled to review and score each individual entry ensuring a maximum of geek integrity. In a world where geek culture has blown up, the Geekie Awards will separate the true geeks from the window dressers and tourists with exacting precision to make sure that only the finest rise to the top. It’s like the Hunger Games, only with more video games and less child death.

This year, NMR is honored to be presenting the award for Best Personality, and it’s a category that includes tons of YouTube favorites. The nominees include Kim Horcher, the host of the Young Turks’ “Nerd Alert”; Aggressive Comics’ resident “Geekgasm” ranter Jenny Lorenzo; geek blogger extraordinaire Jenna Busch; comic book queen Danni Danger of the Weird Girls Network; and last but not least, YouTube’s beloved comedy geeks Anthony Padilla and Ian Hecox of SMOSH.

The Geekies also recognize the achievements of some of the giants of geek culture. Last year, the Geekies presented Marvel Comics OG Stan Lee with a lifetime achievement award and were favored with a hymn to geekdom from Stan the Man himself. This year, Geek of the Year award will go to the actual living face of your childhood “Star Trek: The Next Generation” and “Reading Rainbow” star Levar Burton.

You can check out a full list of the night’s nominees below. If you’re in the LA area and would like to attend, there are still a few tickets available, but they’re being snatched up fast. Click here for details.
