Actor Rainn Wilson is bringing his channel SoulPancake to television through a deal with Participant Media’s Pivot TV. Wilson is best known for his highly memorable role as Dwight Schrute on long-running sitcom “The Office,” but Wilson is also the brains and star power behind SoulPancake. Originally conceived as a website for original content, Soulpancake’s YouTube channel has become the home for some enduring sketches. The channel plays host to an eclectic mix of popular series including “Kid President” and Wilson’s own “Metaphysical Milkshake,” where he interviews celebrities about a range of philosophical topics in the back of a 1970’s Astro van.
Soulpancake will make the jump to television via Pivot TV, which will air “The Mixtape by Soulpancake,” a remixed collection of the channel’s most popular sketches. Pivot’s official mission is to provide content that appeals to millennials, the coveted 18-34 demographic that makes advertisers weak in the knees. Soulpancake, with their varied mix of web-friendly content has proven millennial appeal, making it an apt addition to Pivot’s programming roster. The show features bits and sketches as well as interviews with a host of popular stars and celebrities, from actress Mindy Kaling to entrepreneur Elon Musk.
Wilson and his SoulPancake partners Joshua Homnick and Devon Gundry launched Soulpancake as a website in 2008 but quickly transitioned to YouTube after video content on the site proved popular. Originally the site was built around Wilson’s “Metaphysical Milkshake,” but soon expanded to include a handful of other recurring sketches. The channel currently boasts 1.3 million subscribers and over 150 million views. Another popular Soulpancake series, “Kid President,” was picked up by The Hub Network earlier this summer.
