If you’ve been on the edge of your seat waiting for the premier of “The Chair,” the Starz documentary reality series that boasts Shane Dawson as a participant, then your wait is nearly over. At least, it is if you’re a Starz subscriber with access to the network’s digital outlet, Starz Play. Starz has elected to make the first five episodes of “The Chair” available early to its digital subscribers in advance of the show’s broadcast release. Starz Play users will be able to stream all five initial episodes starting starting at 12:01 am on September 6th. Non-digital “peasants” will have to wait for the show’s broadcast premiere at 11 pm.
“The Chair” is part documentary and part competition show. Shane Dawson and fellow filmmaker Anna Martemucci compete to produce original films based on the same screenplay. Both directors have the same budget and are restricted to shooting locations in the same city, Pittsburgh. The resulting films will both see a theatrical debut with the winner being determined by votes over social media.
An early trailer for Shane Dawson’s film, titled “Not Cool” shows liberal use of Shane’s trademarks of off-color humor and at least a little bit of cross dressing. Martemucci’s adaptation, “Hollidaysburg,” is slightly more sedate, and seems to share a bit more DNA with “Garden State” than with viral sketch comedy. Both films have the professional finish that only high production values can bring, but the contest does seem a little bit mismatched. No matter the individual merits of either film it’s not likely that Martemucci, who currenly boasts a little over 1,800 twitter followers, could marshall enough online votes to overthrow Dawson, whose follower count currently sits at a cool 2.15 million.
You can check out both trailers below and let us know what you think. Also be sure to look out for “The Chair” when it premiers on September 6th.
