NMR Predicts: Streamy Award Winners 2014

Screen Shot 2014-09-05 at 2.18.45 PM

If there’s anything NMR loves more than watching/sharing/loving/hating YouTube videos, it’s award shows. And as far as award shows go, the one we’re typically most excited about is the Streamys. Could we ask for anything better than an award show full of YouTube stars? How about one where all the awards aren’t summarily given out to Hollywood stars instead of actual YouTubers? That might just be asking for the moon though …

But since the Streamys proper are this Sunday, we thought we’d make the most of the pre-show and attempt to guess who the winners will be. Obviously it is tough because we love all these people and all these channels … but someone has to win. Here is our list guessing the winners — and the reason why — in advance of Sunday’s show:

(winner in blue … and bolded in case you are colorblind … never say that NMR doesn’t care)

Channel, Show, or Series Overall

Jenna Marbles
My Drunk Kitchen
Ryan Higa

This is a tricky one because there is no “Hollywood” choice. Smosh and Jenna would have been “cool” picks a year ago and Ryan Higa has been on an upswing. MyMusic is the critical darling while Hannah Hart has had a boom year — we think she takes it.

Mortal Kombat: Legacy II
The Lizzie Bennet Diaries

Mortal Kombat is the “classic Hollywood” choice. But Joey Graceffa is kind of going “new Hollywood,” so we think Storytellers wins this one.

Channel, Show, or Series Subject

Action and Sci-Fi

Action Movie Kid
Corridor Digital
Mortal Kombat: Legacy II
Red vs. Blue
Video Game High School

Hollywood plays — Mortal Kombat wins out over VGHS.

Kandee Johnson
Michelle Phan

With the year she’s had, the Streamys almost can’t not give it to Michelle Phan. Also see Bethany Mota below.

Bethany Mota
Lauren Curtis
Maiah Ocando

See Michelle Phan comment above.

Smosh Games
SourceFed Nerd

We really want to call for the upset, but we don’t think they can ignore the blinding light that is PewDiePie right now.

Kids and Family

Convos With My 2-Year-Old
Kid President
Kids React

Kids React is going to Nickelodeon — Nick Cannon, Doug, Rugrats — prestige, prestige! But Kid President is doing TV too — decisions, decisions.

News and Current Events

Huffpost Live
Retro Report
YouTube Nation

Look for this years hot new thing to take it over last years “hot new thing,” Sourcefed.

First Person

Grace Helbig
Jenna Marbles
Justine Ezarik
Maiah Ocando
Tyler Oakley

Grace or Tyler, Grace or Tyler? Our mind leans towards Grace, our heart towards them choosing Tyler. In the end, Grace won it last year and we can see them not wanting to do a “repeat” thing.

Ensemble Cast

ArScheerio Paul
Next Time On Lonny
The Annoying Orange
Video Game High School

Next Time on Lonny is the Hollywood choice … but it also deserves this one. Ooh, maybe Ben Stiller will show up?

Original Song

#LEH, Superwoman and Humble The Poet
Airplanes and Terminals, Timothy DeLaGhetto
Love Again, Pentatonix
Never Wanna Let You Go, Megan Nicole
Whistle While I Work It, Chester See

Damn, we dug Airplanes and Terminals from Timothy DeLaGhetto, but we don’t think the Streamys can see anything but Pentatonix.

Viner of the Year

Brittany Furlan
Cameron Dallas
King Bach
Lele Pons
Marcus Johns

Brittany is sort of the Grace Helbig of Vine — you just give her stuff because you know her name the best. But she made a flap at the Daytime Emmys, quite possibly making her too edgy for the family-friendly Streamys. We think Cameron Dallas is the benefactor here.

Audience Choice: Entertainer of the Year

Bethany Mota
Brittany Furlan
Grace Helbig
Jack Vale
Jenna Marbles
Maiah Ocando
Michelle Phan
Ryan Higa
Toby Turner
Tyler Oakley

For us, this one is the toughest call. But with that awesome list of talent, we see the Streamys only considering the two names with the biggest “buzz appeal” right now: Tyler Oakley and Bethany Mota. In the end, we bet Bethany gets it (but don’t be surprised if Grace “upsets”).

Audience Choice: Show of The Year

Emma Approved
Kids React
Nerdy Nummies
Rooster Teeth
The Philip DeFranco Show
Video Game High School

It’s damn near criminal that Next Time on Lonny or even Firsts didn’t make this category. Do they give it to Video Game High School? No, we think it goes into upset mode with Nerdy Nummies getting it.
