In an ambitious project designed to demonstrate that it is down with the youths, one of Britain’s most venerable institutions, the British Museum, is relocating to Minecraft. Representatives from the British Museum have been scouring Reddit for Minecraft builders to participate in a massive crowdsourced community project. The goal is to reconstruct that museum’s massive and historic buiding, block by block, in Minecraft. The construction of the museum’s famous Great Court would hopefully be completed by October 16, in time for a planned lecture series on the difference between public art and art collections in the digital age.
This is one of several major Minecraft projects kicked off by governments and public institutions in recent years. A project sponsored by the Danish government saw that entire country’s topography recreated out of Minecraft blocks. That project quickly came to ruin as pranksters blew up and defaced parts of the map with American flags.
It’s not yet clear how the project will be run or how many Minecrafters will participate, but a subreddit created to organize the build has been flooded with requests for information and offers to participate. The project is open to the public regardless of country but builders must apply and be accepted to a scheduled built period.
Share this article with your favorite Minecraft Creator and maybe they’ll live-stream the build!
