Vimeo has snagged a deal with distribution company Entertainment One for the release of four films this fall including one that stars the late comedy legend Robin Williams. The deal was announced at the Toronto International Film Festival and and will bring four independent films to Vimeo for day-and-date release starting in September. The deal will also give Vimeo access to Entertainment One’s extensive catalog of TV shows and movies, vastly expanding the company’s On-Demand library.
All four films will be released for purchase on on-demand rental on the day of their theatrical release. Digital distribution has become a valuable tool for the indie film industry, helping to create a wider audience for films that often only see a limited release in theaters. Digital download gives film enthusiasts who don’t live in major cities and cultural hubs a chance to rent or own indie films and provides an additional source of revenue for film makers.
The first of the four films, Claudia Myers “Fort Bliss” will be released September 9th followed by Ryan Phillippe vehicle “Catch Hell” on October 10th and Marijuana documentary “Culture High” on October 17th. The last release is also likely to be the most hotly anticipated. “A Merry Friggin Christmas” starring Lauren Graham, Joel McHale, and the late Robin Williams will appear on November 7th. The holiday road-trip comedy is one of the last projects Williams completed before his tragic death earlier this summer.
