Waiting on a movie you’re insanely excited for to finally come out is no easy task. Particularly after the trailer is dropped. Much like the song “Titanium” by David Guetta (ft. Sia), your anticipation just builds and builds and– well, you either combust or shut down completely. Or get on with your life for the time being. One of those things.
If you’re reeling from today’s Pitch Perfect 2 trailer premiere, we want to make sure you do the last of those options so when the movie FINALLY F**KING COMES OUT in May, you’ll actually still be around to see it.
So in an attempt to wean you off watching that trailer on repeat and sobbing quietly to the harmonies of this new non-cups version of “When I’m Gone,” I’ve compiled a list of a cappella videos for you to watch instead. Or at least alternate with the trailer. Deep breaths. It’ll be okay. Here we go.
I love Julia Westlin’s cover of Tove Lo’s “Habits (Stay High).” This is a good one to start with since we’re going to be breaking the habit of watching that trailer over and over again, right? Right.
Next, check out Berklee College of Music’s a cappella group Pitch Slapped performing this medley of popular songs they used to compete in the ICCA Championship. I realize there are several…difficult words in that sentence. Look, we’re gonna get through this gradually, not all at once.
Taylor Swift’s “I Knew You Were Trouble” as sung by the phenomenal Walk Off the Earth with the crazy beatboxing skills of KRNFX. Hey, did you know Taylor’s “We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together” will be featured in Pitch Perfect 2? So psyched.
This “Bad Romance” cover by On the Rocks is a national treasure. Also, you know what’s a bad romance? Beca and Jesse. I mean, seriously, they make no sense whatsoever. Beca and Chloe, on the other hand…
Which brings us to BYU Noteworthy’s “Without You”/”I Will Wait” mashup. Why? Because “Without You” is a David Guetta song, even though it’s not the RIGHT David Guetta song. Yeah, you know what I mean.
Okay. Let’s buckle down and really try to get past all this Pitch Perfect talk now, shall we? Yes. Listen to some talented Berkley University alumni recap the top songs of 2013. Gotta love all these pop hits. Um, hold on, you may wanna stop before you get to 2:48. Just…ah, shit.
And here’s “We Can’t Stop” performed by Jimmy Fallon, The Roots, and Miley Cyrus herself. Kinda like we can’t stop watching the Pitch Perfect 2 trailer, right? Wait. Dammit.
This entire list could have been Pentatonix; I think we all know that. But this beautiful medley of pop songs telling the story of The Wizard of Oz (or in this case, “The Wizard of Ahhhs”) by Pentatonix and Todrick Hall is one of my favorites. Once again, Pentatonix captures– yep, just remembered they’re in the movie. They’re in Pitch Perfect 2. Shitballs.
Let’s try topical! Here we have Mark “The Hammer” Arata singing the theme from The Hunger Games. Let’s get excited for Mockingjay! You know who’s the most underrated part of the movies? Effie Trinket. She’s so great. I mean, Elizabeth Banks— nOPE. NOPE. THAT DIDN’T GO AS PLANNED.
Yes! Here we go! Karmin performing their excellent single “Acapella,” well, a cappella. Yeah! Crushed it!
…alongside Mike Tompkins. Mike Tompkins. Who did that cover of “Starships” with–
